Fudan University Study Abroad Opportunities

Fudan University offers various immersion programs for international students. Ranging from one month to one year, these programs provide students with the opportunity to not only experience Chinese culture, but also acquire skills applicable in their future career. Three options, including scholarship support, are shown here. 

International Summer Session

Fudan University offers a four-week International Summer Session program from July 7 to Aug. 4, 2017. Students may choose from 18 courses across several disciplines, including history and culture, business and economy, society and politics, as well as science and technology. Three Chinese-language courses and two professional engineering courses also are offered in International Summer Session. The program comprises weekend trips to Hangzhou, Tongli and Shanghai. It also offers evening cultural events such as river cruises, calligraphy courses and an aerobatics show. In addition to a certificate of completion, students will have the ability to transfer the credits to their home institution.

Application Process

The application deadline is May 10, 2017, and has an application fee of RMB 400. Tuition is RMB 13,800. International students can apply online here, and Chinese citizens may apply on the application provided here. The application consists of:

  • one valid passport copy;
  • graduation certificate of document proving student status at current university;
  • transcripts; and
  • one copy of English fluency, if not native (TOEFL iBT of 85 or higher of IELTS of 6.5 or above).
If any materials are not originally in Chinese or English, they need officially notarized with a Chinese or English translation. In some circumstances, students may be asked to submit extra materials.

Scholarship Opportunities

Shanghai Summer School Scholarship
North American students may receive a tuition waiver, free housing and insurance covered for the duration of the program. Some activities may also be covered under this plan. “Self-supporting” Students
Students declared as “self-supporting” or “independent” at their home institution are qualified to receive a 10 percent tuition discount. To begin the application process, contact your study abroad coordinator to email nominations to Iss@fudan.edu.cn.

Exchange Tuition Waiver
If a home institution has awarded a student with a tuition waiver, it can be applied to the program. To begin the application process, contact your study abroad coordinator to email nominations to Iss@fudan.edu.cn.

Fudan Fellow Program

The Fudan Fellow Program is available to full-time students of any degree type who are interested in having a research project on China issues that will promote communication between Fudan University faculty and international scholars. Fellows are invited for four to 16 weeks. For each month on campus, fellows are asked to have at least one lecture or hold workshops and seminars. By completion of the program, fellows are encouraged to publish papers on their research. 

Application Process

Applications, which should be submitted to the Fudan Fellow Program Academic Committee, are considered on a case-by-case basis. Applications should include:

  • a cover letter;
  • CV;
  • research proposal;
  • and two recommendations by scholars.

Scholarship Opportunities

The program funds accommodation and roundtrip airfare. A monthly stipend of RMB 5,000 for students, RMB 10,000 for assistant professors and postdocs or RMB 15,000 for professors and associate professors will be granted.

Fudan University Postgraduate Programs for International Students

Fudan University offers 163 master and 121 doctoral programs from 32 schools or departments to international students. There are English-taught programs and Chinese-taught programs—all of which are full-time. Master’s programs range from two to three years, and doctoral programs are three years. English degrees consist of programs such as engineering, business, communications, pharmaceutics, politics and Chinese language and culture. Application Process

The time frame to apply as an international student to Fudan University’s postgraduate programs is from Nov. 28, 2016 to Feb.19, 2017. For students who have declared as “self-supporting” or “independent” at their home institution, the deadline is from Feb. 20 to April 30, 2017. The online application has a nonrefundable fee of RMB 800.

For Chinese-taught programs, proof of Chinese language experience, such as a copy of HSK results, is required. Science, engineering and medicine programs require a Level 5 (210 or above) HSK score, while arts, humanities, management, journalism, law and social sciences require Level 5 (240 or above) or Level 6 (180 or above). Students who have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree taught in Chinese in China, usually are not required to provide a copy of valid HSK results.

Once the online application is confirmed, print out the application form, affix a photo in the designated area and sign. Applicants must send the required paper documents—online application, scholarship application, photocopy of passport, personal statement, two sealed recommendation letters, transcripts, copy of diploma, language certificate and score report, and papers or other supplementary documents to prove academic ability—to the related school/department at Fudan University by mail, courier or in person in two weeks. Two sets of the application, passport verification, scholarship application form and diploma are required.

The arrival time of the application documents will be subject to the receipt time of the mail. Please refer to the contact information of related school/department for the mailing address, and mark “application materials for postgraduate admission 2017” on the envelope. The above-listed application documents in Item 4, 5, 6 must be original or notarized copy—and with notarized Chinese or English translation, if the original one is not in Chinese or English.

Scholarship Opportunities

Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students
There are two categories of awards. Category A allows exemption from tuition fees, provides a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000 for master’s students or RMB 3,500 for doctoral students, free on-campus accommodation and medical insurance. Category B is exemption from tuition fees and provides medical insurance.

Non-Chinese citizens who have received an offer to the postgraduate program are eligible to apply. Master’s students must have obtained a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35, while doctorate students should have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40. Students who are enrolled in a joint program or majoring in one’s language or a language/literature in a third language (e.g. French) are ineligible. Finally, students should not have any other scholarship provided by the Chinese government.  

Students must apply online and print the application form for the Shanghai Government Scholarship between Nov. 28, 2016 to Feb. 19, 2017. Select “self-support” as the “fund source,” and, when completing the Fudan University application, choose the option of “Shanghai Government Scholarship.” Applicants must send all the required documents to Fudan University by post or in person before Feb. 19, 2017.  

The application consists of the application form, a 1,500-word personal statement, diploma or proof of graduation, application form for postgraduate program and copy of valid passport verification. If any materials are not originally in Chinese or English, they must be officially notarized with a Chinese or English translation.

Recipients of the Shangahi Government Scholarship will be announced approximately around April 15, 2017. Thereafter, scholarship students must participate in an annual scholarship evaluation and cannot change their major or study period after applying.

Chinese Government Special Scholarship
The Chinese Government Special Scholarship allows exemption from tuition fees, provides a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000 for master’s students or RMB 3,500 for doctoral students, free on-campus accommodation and medical insurance.
